The Challenge
Café branding can become predictable quickly. Soft colours, hand-drawn illustrations and overly wholesome personalities are on every street corner, while specialty coffee often swings in the opposite direction towards minimal, serious and overly refined.
Blue Bear needed to sit somewhere between the two.
The challenge was to make the café feel warm and approachable without becoming cute, and considered enough to feel premium without becoming pretentious.
The existing name already gave the brand a strong starting point. The question was what kind of bear Blue Bear should be.
The Result
A friendly bear with some character.
Instead of turning the bear into a traditional cute mascot, I gave it a restrained expression and a little attitude. It does not need to perform or shout for attention. It simply exists within the brand, quietly observing what is going on, with a little attitude.
That became the personality of Blue Bear.
The bear brings warmth and recognition, while typography, colour and layout keep the identity refined enough for specialty coffee. The character can be front and centre on a coffee bag, or sit quietly in the corner of a cup without taking over the design.
I extended the system across the café experience, including coffee packaging, cups, menus, loyalty cards, uniforms and other touchpoints. The copy follows the same personality, giving the brand small opportunities to speak to people throughout their visit.
The result is a café identity that feels friendly, confident and slightly cheeky, without losing the quality and restraint expected from a specialty coffee brand.
